The Foundry Mari 1.3v1 (x64)

MARI allows artists to concentrate on painting detailed, multi-layered textures directly onto 3D models in a fluid and natural way. MARI was originally conceived at Weta Digital, because no existing commercial product could handle the complex, highly detailed look development work required by films such as District 9 and Avatar.

MARI has been designed by artists to give them immediate feedback, in context, working with multiple interacting models from any angle and in animated motion. MARI’s responsive creative toolset allows painting to be completed in a single application, reducing the need to export, paint in 2D and re-import.

MAR101 – Introduction to Mari

Professor: Gareth Jensen

Our first ever course in Mari is designed to get everybody up to speed with this new and excitingly powerful 3D painting package from The Foundry. Mari is a great leap forward in professional texture painting by being both users friendly and capable of dealing with a staggering large amount of resolution. Professor Gareth Jensen been working with Mari for the past few years as it was developed at Weta Digital and has continued to use it at Double Negative where he currently works. fxphd members will have access to Mari on Linux via the fxphd VPN.

Jensen comes from a background of physical film effects including make-up/prosthetics and painting ranging from props through to miniatures. Mari allows him to take a similar approach to texturing a digital asset by automatically seaming multi-patch UV’s giving a much more complete hands-on feel, similar to that of painting a physical model.

In this course we will be covering the basics to get you up and running, including a breakdown of the tools and palettes that you will find yourself most often using. We will be covering such great tools as paint through, heal/tow and the remarkable warping tools. We will going through the concept of Mari’s shaders and channels system as well as its comprehensive masking options.

Over the course of the term we will be taking an asset from start to finish. f you work like Jensen you probably like using all the tools at your disposal so we will also show how Mari works easily with other packages. I will be going over basic process of working in conjunction with Nuke and also the wonderfully simple to use camera projection set up for all your Photoshop projections.

In Jensen’s 10 years of experience within the film industry, he has had the opportunity to work for both physical effects as well as digital and even began his career as a creature actor for Lord of the Rings. Having previously studied make-up and prosthetics for film in New Zealand his role in the industry further progressed with the renowned Weta Workshop where he was involved in major productions such as King Kong, 30 Days of Night, District 9, Prince Caspian and more recently Avatar. Developing his skills amongst some of the best artists in the industry, Jensen has also trained as a creature and props painter and it was during the production of Avatar that he made the decision to expand his role into the digital world. Switching over to Weta Digital as a texture and look dev artist on Avatar, Jensen has been able to work with Mari during its development and has now used it for over 2 years and is continuing to use it within Double Negatives production pipeline. His background in physical effects has left him with a strong base understanding of how to paint realistic textures and being able to use Mari as his digital medium has made this transition a lot smoother.

Class 1:
A guided tour of the Mari GUI introducing the contents of the toolbox and a brief overview of the pallets. We will also be looking at setting up your project and talk about the subject of resolution.

Class 2:
Approaching an asset by gathering ideas and putting a solid aim together. We will be covering setting up projectors in Mari and using them with Photoshop to design a paint scheme. I will also show you how to create and store custom palettes inside Mari.

Class 3:
In this class we look at cleaning up our projections and become familiar with object handling and fast paint application using both 3D and UV views.

Class 4:
An introduction to the Mari shader system and a demonstration in how to use Mari with Maya texturing tools.

Class 5:
In this class we will be learning how to version up geometry in the object tab, as well as how to paint a metal mask.

Class 6:
In this class we will start to combine the powerful tools and methods we have learnt so far to create interesting and believable rust masks.

Class 7:
In this class we will be looking at ways to use textures in Mari that have been produced in other applications. We will also be going over techniques for weathering your asset.

Class 8:
In this class I will be showing you how to bake shaders out of Mari and also how to apply the power of Nuke to your texturing workflow.

Class 9:
Painting a human hand, in this class I am going to show you one approach to painting skin in Mari. Part 1 of 2.

VUE201 – A Comprehensive Guide to Vue

Taught by Eran Dinur, this course offers a comprehensive approach to learning Vue, with an emphasis on workflow
and techniques needed for effectively using it in various professional production scenarios.
From creating assets for matte painting and compositing to animating and rendering complete 3D scenes.
Vue has gained a prominent position in the industry as a tool for creating rich and detailed 3D natural scenery
and there’s an ever-growing demand for competent Vue artists.

We will first cover all of the main aspects of Vue – the different atmospheric models, polygonal and procedural terrains,
EcoSystems, animation, materials and plant editing, and then dig deeper into more complex areas such as fractal functions
and multi-layered shaders. Keeping in mind the needs of matte painting and compositing, we will also explore Vue’s extensive
multi-pass rendering, matte generation and export options.

Class 1: Introduction to Vue
- We will look at some of the strengths and unique capabilities of Vue. Then we’ll build a simple scene,
which will allow us to get familiar with the interface and various editors.

Class 2: Plants and EcoSystems
- After examining Vue’s SolidGrowth plants, We’ll take a close look at Vue’s fantastic distribution system.
We’ll explore the different approaches to setting up EcoSystems, from free-hand painting to defining distribution
and interaction rules.

Class 3: Atmosphere and lighting
- Mastering the atmospheric models in Vue is essential for achieving good looking renders.
We will devote most of the class to the Spectral atmosphere and volumetric clouds,
and will also take a short look at the standard model and environment mapping.

Class 4: Terrains
- We’ll go through the different terrain types (height field, procedural, large scale and infinite),
and explore terrain hand-sculpting and erosion techniques, as well as basic function editing,
and spherical terrains.

Class 5: Materials and natural distribution
- We will create textured and procedural materials and layer them using natural distribution rules.
We will also create water material and explore transparency, refraction and murkiness.

Class 6: The function Editor
- In this class we will dig deep inside Vue’s powerful node-based function editor,
and learn how to create elaborate terrains and materials using fractal algorithms and filters.

Class 7: Animation
- Importing cameras from external applications, camera and object animation,
animating atmospheres and clouds, wind animation and ventilators,
animating water materials and terrains.

Class 8: Rendering and exporting
- Vue has an extensive multi-pass rendering system, and we’ll take a close look at the various passes
and their potential usage.
We’ll also look at render quality configurations, as well as object and material export options.

Class 9: Advanced Techniques 1
- Displacement, sub-surface scattering, Hyper textures and camera projection mapping.

Class 10: Advanced Techniques 2
- More lighting, terrain, material, plants and EcoSystem techniques.

The Pixel Farm PFTrack, PFPrep, PFClean, PFMatchit (x64 Windows/Linux/MacOSX) By XFORCE

PFTrack
PFTrack 2011 has been completely re-written as a 64-bit, GPU-accelerated application, allowing scalable performance as more robust components becomes available, while vastly improving processing speeds on modest computer hardware. Significant increases in productivity are accomplished through The Pixel Farm’s distinctive node-based flowgraph architecture. The Tracking Tree allows artists to experiment with multiple techniques in a non-linear, non-destructive environment to achieve the most accurate solution possible. Newly designed Image Modelling tools, with full-resolution Texture Extraction, generate detailed geometry for scene fitting, shadow boxing, and set reconstruction. PFTrack’s per-pixel Z-Depth now supports masks to specify the relative depth ordering of objects in the scene, producing a grey-scale depth map image and triangular mesh geometry. Geometry Tracking now supports deformable groups, allowing a triangular mesh to deform as it’s vertices track a non-rigid moving object, such as an actor’s face while speaking. Extensive image processing capabilities include Shutter Fix for correcting the rolling shutter errors of footage originating from CMOS sensor cameras, Transform Clip for cropping, resizing and rotating source footage, a new Optical Flow node for calculating and exporting dense motion fields, vector-based keyframable Retiming, unsurpassed Lens management, and a host of Enhancement functions for making footage more “trackable”.

PFMatchit
PFMatchit has been released in response to customer demand for a lower entry point to The Pixel Farm’s technology and is the first product to harness the company’s new 64-bit, node-based flowgraph architecture. This new technology dramatically improves the fundamental processes involved in camera tracking, one of the most important areas of successful VFX creation, ushering in unprecedented levels of flexibility, control, accuracy and speed.

PFPrep
From creating dailies through to full DI image preparation, PFPrep has it all. The focused yet well chosen toolset cherry picks the renowned image processing technologies from PFClean to provide the industry’s finest, single solution for prepping footage for all aspects of present-day film production, regardless of content origination. GPU acceleration of the complex image algorithms in combination with integrated batch processing ensures the fastest and most accurate results across footage of any type and resolution, within schedule and budget.

PFClean
When PFClean hit the film restoration community in 2004 it provided the well needed breath of fresh air in a market dominated by technical products that offered little consideration for productivity and deadline deliveries. Delivering many industry firsts such as the unique ‘non destructive’ metadata toolset, completely automated dustbusting and a complete conform/editing toolset, PFClean was quickly established as the remastering and digital restoration package to own, where we lead, others can only follow. Since its release, a large number of renowned facilities rapidly adopted the package for its vast toolset, ease of use, productivity and outright ability to deliver. Company SolidThinking released major updates for its two packages SolidThinking 8.5 and SolidThinking Inspired 8.5. These applications are addressed to industrial designers, can be used for creating and rendering photorealistic three-dimensional models of future products and eliminate the need for physical prototypes.

Innovative tools and features introduced in version SolidThinking 8.5, allows professionals to work more productively, as well as significantly improve the quality of rendering 3D-models. Including the attention of users requested an extended library of materials with easy navigation tools and preview the three-dimensional scenes overlaid with light. Designers can also easily create their own library materials.

Progressive rendering algorithms, and rendering in real time provides the opportunity to interact with three-dimensional scene on the stage to preview and render. The new version includes support for complex shaders that are suitable for modeling of reflective surfaces and materials such as metal, iced glass, car paint, etc.
The application allows re-rendering of selected areas of the picture. The package also includes a new wizard that will help users choose the best unit of measure and determine the allowable error (tolerances) with the size of the model. Specialists will be able to use the new 3D-manipulators for more accurate scaling, rotating and moving objects.
An update available for the product SolidThinking Inspired proposes to assess an integrated technology Morphogenesis Technology.
This development is responsible for the simulation of various natural processes and, for example, allows you to simulate the biological growth and transformation of an object placed in a specific environment.
The list of improvements, provided in version 8.0 also includes NURBS-tools for conceptual design, the possibility of presenting the entire design process in a tree structure, as well as tools for more accurate editing of model parameters.
The new version SolidThinking Inspired tightly integrated with leading CAD solutions, as well as computer-aided modeling and manufacturing and supports rendering technology in real time.

System Requirements for Unity Authoring
Windows: XP SP2 or later; Mac OS X: Intel CPU & “Leopard” 10.5 or later. Note that Unity was not tested on server versions of Windows and OS X.
Graphics card with 64 MB of VRAM and pixel shaders or 4 texture units. Any card made in this millennium should work.
Using Occlusion Culling requires GPU with Occlusion Query support (some Intel GPUs do not support that).
The rest only depends on the complexity of your projects!.

Install win
Instructions:
1. Download Unity 3.1 and activate with a free “Indie Licence” (you can select Internet Activation).
2. Download the patch and extract it from the zipped archive (um3_b94.exe)
3. Start um3_b94.exe – it will sit in your system tray. (it can be run from any directory)
4. Start unity3d as normal, or from Monodevelop – it should come up in “Pro” mode. (Dark Grey GUI)
Patched to -> Unity Pro, Asset Server and Android Advanced (Android Advanced needs Registered Android SDK from Google)
With Unity running …Go to Help>About Unity…bottom right corner of pop-up window shows you what is currently licensed.

*note: If you had a previous installation of Unity (even if you uninstalled it) and you don’t see the option to load the Bootcamp Demo in Unity 3.1 on start-up,

you can find it in the following Directory (it’s a installation glitch)

Project Messiah Studio PRO v5.0

is a powerful animation & rendering software package specifically
designed to handle the most demanding character animation &
rendering needs. It has been quietly used in feature films, commercials,
games, music videos and print ads for over 10 years; and is now one of

Capture One uses the concept of ‘Collections’ to group images together, in the example shown below this happens to be images in a particular folder, although in reality images from various sources can be grouped into a collection. The default layout has the collection pane (thumbnails) on the left, preview / work pane in the center and function tabs on the right. All panes can be resized or collapsed, you can also work in full screen mode without a titlebar.
The one big strength Capture One DSLR has over the Canon software is that all adjustments happen in (almost) realtime. That means you can make a grey balance adjustment and see the change immediately, this is far better than the rather slow-to-change Canon FIle Image Viewer.

You can alternatively switch to a horizontal view (press F8) which shifts the collection pane to the bottom of the window. This is probably a more useful layout for landscape photography.

Color Management and Preferences
Globally you can set various preferences including full color management support. Capture One DSLR comes provided with profiles for the EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds under various light conditions. You can also select destination color profiles for output, web and proof destinations as well as your monitor profile. There are also a wide range of preferences to choose from, click on the reduced image below to see them in more detail.

Operation and Workflow
Operationally you can work on previous shot and stored images or capture directly from the camera ‘into’ a collection live in the Capture One DSLR application. This feature wasn’t tested at this stage.
As you change settings such as color balance, sharpening etc. these are stored by Capture One in its own database (remembered on a per image basis). These settings can be saved and loaded as well as applied to selected images, a batch ‘development’ or an entire collection. Settings are arranged into three of the five function tabs on the function pane, each function pane is described below.

Output
Below you will find two versions of the same EOS-1Ds RAW image output as JPEG from both Capture One DSLR and Canon’s own File Viewer Utility. Remember that Capture One DSLR is still in its Beta form and thus image quality and performance may not be true to the final version. I do like the overall tonal balance and color response of the Capture One DSLR image, very nice.
