Creating User Feedback in UDK

Duration 1h 4m Project Files Included 15 FPS MP4

In this series of UDK tutorials we will learn some of the common ways to create user feedback in UDK.

We’ll get started by discussing the different ways to create user feedback based on the intended audience of the game. We’ll cover creating some of the more obvious forms of user feedback that would be targeted toward the casual gamer audience. After that we’ll look at some more challenging ways to create user feedback like creating subtle hints through audio or a material that shimmers for a moment. Then we’ll continue by learning how to create a material instance to make our objects glow if they are usable and also how to give the user feedback through text.

So by the end of this course, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to begin creating helpful gameplay in your own game projects.

In this series of UDK tutorials we’ll discuss the major foundations of scripting with UnrealScript in UDK and apply what we’ve learned in a single mini project. To start out, we’ll look at several of the terms and techniques that are used when scripting in UDK such as creating and manipulating variables, understanding the different types of operators, and how we can create instructions for our game using functions. We’ll also jump into creating logic with conditional statements, and loops. We’ll even learn how to use basic arrays. To finish up this training, we’ll take what we’ve learned and apply it to creating a simple collection game.

In this series of tutorials, we will learn how to create and utilize flow maps to create a water shader
in UDK.

We will start by discussing what a flow map does and how it can give your water shaders an extra boost
in quality. Then we’ll create a level proxy and water plane for the artist who will be creating the
flow map in MARI.

From there, we will take you through the process of creating the flow map in MARI. You will learn how
to set up your MARI project, how to paint and nudge your flow map, how to utilize the Vector Inspection
Grid to assist in painting flow, and how to scale the flow vector to control intensity. You will finish
up with by learning how to export your flow maps to be used in UDK.

Then we’ll wrap up the training by jumping back into UDK and learn how to set up a water shader that
will utilize our MARI created flow map.

Many modern games focus on environments that include chains, ropes, and vines. These assets can help to create
unique and believable player worlds.

In this UDK tutorial we will focus on multiple methods of constructing these assets and various software
workflows to make the most of texture usage, polygon counts, and artist production time.
