3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster Features and Benefits
New Feature Highlights
Interoperability
With Autodesk? 3ds Max? 9 Extension: Productivity Booster software, you now have more powerful support for AutoCAD? and Revit? software files, including support for AutoCAD 2008 and Revit 2008 versions. New DWG? import options and an optimized import memory management system make the software easier to use and dramatically improve import performance?making it possible to import large files with complex scenes and many objects. The new Select Similar feature parses object metadata to isolate objects with similar characteristics, making simple work of identifying and changing multiple objects in a scene.
Performance
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster includes more than 30 productivity enhancements in the following areas, among others:
- Modelling
- Texturing
- Rendering
- Programming
- Animation
- Biped

Interoperability
Enhancements to File Link and DWG Import
AutoCAD 2008 and Revit 2008 users can import projects into 3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster using the DWG format. This format encapsulates information about geometry, material, lighting, rendering properties, and cameras, streamlining project data exchange across multiple applications. This extension includes enhancements to DWG import performance, reliability, and ease of use.
DWG Import: Memory Management Optimization
Significantly improved memory management enables the import of large and complex scenes with multiple objects in significantly less time than ever before.
Select Similar
By processing metadata of imported objects, 3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster can identify objects with similar attributes. You can now use the Select Similar command in the Quad menu to identify all objects in a scene that contain characteristics similar to those of a selected object, dramatically accelerating workflow when making changes to multiple objects.
Other Improvements
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster also includes improved reliability in these areas:
- Cameras and views import
- File-linking repathed files
- Normals management, to prevent flipping on import (Revit Architecture 2008)
- Material assignments import (Revit Architecture 2008)
- Material naming (Revit Architecture 2008)
- Support of objects exported as solids, enabling use of the Propagate Materials to Instances command (Revit Architecture 2008)
Autodesk Inventor
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster supports Autodesk? Inventor? 2008 software.
FBX Enhanced Support
The Autodesk? FBX? software interoperability format enables artists to exchange assets between 3D applications. Enhancements in FBX include improvements to mesh compatibility, material and lighting information, and animation data when transferring between 3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster and Autodesk? Maya? or Autodesk? MotionBuilder? software.
DWF Support
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster can now publish DWF? files directly through the File menu.
Autodesk Vault 2008
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster enables you to browse assets previously stored in a repository created with Autodesk? Vault 2008 (or earlier versions).
Autodesk 3ds Max 9
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster supports 3ds Max 9 files.
Autodesk Combustion
3ds Max 9 Extension: Productivity Booster supports Autodesk? Combustion? 4 files.
Performance Enhancements
Biped
- You can now select objects from different limbs and use all key types (free, planted, and sliding) on all of them.
- The Pivot Point has been color coded for better feedback of which type of keyframe it belongs to.
- The Trackbar now supports biped IK keyframes, and they are color coded the same way as in Trackview.
- The Biped now has hotkeys to traverse up to the closest branch of any hierarchy, and back down to the corresponding sibling.
- Biped now has its own Quad menu, which is displayed when you right-click any Biped limb.
Bones
- Multiple max bones inside a bone chain can now be simultaneously rotated just like Biped bones to curl the chain.
Compounds Objects
- The Blobmesh object has new limits in the UI to allow for smaller values.
Controllers
- You can now double-click controllers to bring up their properties.
- The Wire Parameters dialog box now has a checkbox to filter out the selected objects. This capability allows for easier navigation of the controller trees, and is modeless.
- Euler controllers now have access to an Euler filter. This action removes flipping on the existing curve.
Load/Save Animation
- Load/Save animation operations can now be performed from Trackview. You simply select a few tracks, and right-click to choose Load or Save Animation.
Material Editor
- Pathing tools for Dx materials are now as robust as for normal max materials. For example, you are now warned about missing maps for .fx files.
Mixer
- You can now strip layer names from tracks when mapping them in the Load/Save UI.
Modelling
- There is a new setting for the number of edges in a chamfer operation.
Modifiers
- The Projection Modifier now performs an auto-reset of the cage to avoid the current shrink-wrap behaviour that leads to inaccurate results.
- The drop-down Modifier list now can accept sequences of characters to navigate through the list, and not only single characters.
- The Projection Modifier can now export its cage onto a mesh and input a mesh to create its cage.
Rendering
- The Setup button in the Output Path dialog box for rendered images is now unghosted, and changing settings for different file formats no longer requires closing the dialog box, reopening it, and changing the file type.
- The Render to Texture dialog box now has settings to allow the exclusion of objects from Ambient Occlusion passes. This allows you to, for example, exclude the low-res object in a projection modifier from the Ambient Occlusion pass.
- Render to texture now supports DDS Half Float.
Skin
- The Skin Load Weights dialog box is now resizable.
Spacewarps
- The Drag Spacewarp dialog box has new default values for a better initial result.
Trackview
- The Show Animated filter now displays only the leaf tracks, and leaves out the branches.
- Zooming in Trackview now zooms to the mouse position, not the center of the view.
- Trackview now defaults to show only the selected objects.
- Trackview has a new flag to hide the Global Tracks.
User Interface
- There is a new CUI shortcut to edit trajectories.
- Color swatches through the application now have a color picker.
- The Controllers menu now allows assigning controllers to multiple selected objects at once.
- Trackview?s Show Only filters are now exposed to the CUI and have been added to the Trackview Quad menu.
- The Rendered Image window (or Virtual Frame Buffer) now has an icon to copy the rendered image onto the Windows clipboard. From there, it can be pasted into any application.
- Bones and IK goals now default to a size of 2 inches after 3ds Max is first launched. The size of subsequent objects defaults to the last value set by you.
XRef
- XRefs can now resolve based on either name or internal ID. This capability allows for easier updating of XRefs in master files.
