    • Lumion is a subproduct made with Quest3D.
Lumion has lots of template art contend, like the Speedtree vegetation and the human characters.
Quest3D is more complete like Unity, software development environment. But it won’t have the art library of Lumion.

  1. if this like lumion 3d, why only 70mb in size while lumion is 2.5GB?

  2. No, quest 3d is for make games and presentations (realtime), lumion only make movies.
Lumion is developed by the same creators of quest.

    great soft.

  3. Hey Guys the included Patch Works ?
    …someone already tested it?

  4. quest3d was long forgotten. can’t believe my eyes when I saw this post. what’s the benefit compared with Unity3D? does it work with Beast?

    • The rendering engine with it’s linear workflow is really good and mature, producing a better HDR rendering in my opinion. But Quest3D is still based on DirectX 9, and this is becoming a constrain to it. For instance, no soft particles nor AA with 32bits buffer (unless they implemented deferred AA on version 5.0). The renderer is still good for current standards, but it is on the edge.

The real strenght of Quest3D is it’s scripting plataform. Visual scripting very powerfull and simple. The best thing on Unity is Antares Universe aka VIZIO, but still not as clean as Quest environment. Uscript is a kitsch Kismet implementation. Playmaker is just a FSM.
The ability to program on the go is really nice too.
I can’t put simply how well designed and empowering is the scripting environment in Quest3D, so I’ll just say that prototyping gameplay/interaction will be done the fastest and bug-free way using Quest3D, specially if the programmer is to be a one-man-army. And don’t be deceived by the word “prototyping”. It is actually capable of producing very high quality and creative software. The beauty is that, as you accomplish stuff very quickly, you can spend more time fine tunning it.

The greatest downside is the deployment option, just PC executable. The web plugin is quite problematic in the matters of compatibility, but when it works, it is quite light-weighted. But in Unity you have from Mac OS and web to Mobile and Consoles.

I would recommed it instead of Unity for corporate 3d applications. Or if you are into indie game development and are not seduced by the mobile/web possible bubble, (and don’t expect to produce for consoles anytime soon).

Word from a paying user of Quest3D as of 2004, currently using Unity+VIZIO because of web/mobile deployment for advertising.

    • Oh, and it does not have a radiosity lightmap baker like beast. It expect you to bake it on your package of choice. This also means that spherical harmonics are not built in. You would need to develop the shaders and workflow.
