Patton also discusses how to quickly create backgrounds that enhance the character and overall composition.

In this DVD, Kevin Hudson shows why character modelers are moving away from Nurbs modeling and toward Polygon/Subdivision surface modeling, which allows more freedom to localize detail and work with texture. Follow along as Kevin considers and sculpts the various features of the face – nose, mouth, eyelids and ears – as he transforms this simple structure into something as complex as the human head.

Starting with concept paintings provided by BTS Art Director Mark Goerner, Jared goes through the process of creating simple 3D geometry and matching the camera in Maya. In Photoshop? he executes both a pan and tile style 2D matte painting, and one to be used with a 3D camera move. He covers techniques for keying, creating custom brushes and working with Photoshop?s perspective tools. In Maya, Jared shows how to project the painting onto the 3D geometry in preparation for the final camera move. In the second DVD of this image modeling series, Greg Downing delves into more advanced photogrammetry techniques. This lesson teaches you how to perform image-based modeling and texturing within Maya using cameras calibrated for Realviz ImageModeler. Greg shows you how using panoramas for photogrammetry allows you to construct a location with a minimal number of images. He then illustrates how to calibrate those panoramas in Realviz ImageModeler for image-based modeling and texturing within Maya. This DVD assumes a basic familiarity with polygonal modeling, and though the examples are demonstrated within Maya, the workflow is applicable to any 3D package.

The art of character animation is about telling story through acting. This lecture covers the setup of a two-character scene that includes a simple character, with few keyable attributes, and a complex character with many keyable attributes. We will approach setting major key poses, moving holds, extremes, overlap and contact positions together with adding and freeing tangent weight on function-curves. Inbetweens are also used to control the contrast and spacing of movement in our animation. The end result is a fully realized scene that is believable and sophisticated.

This lecture introduces the basic concepts of lighting and rendering a scene. It begins by introducing Render Globals, Depth-Map and Raytrace shadows, and each of the light types in Maya. Three-point lighting is demonstrated as an effective starting point for lighting a scene. More advanced topics such as reflected light, gobos, and optical effects are introduced. The lecture demonstrates a simple but rich three-point light setup, and then illustrates a more complex, fully realized scene, using the tools learned.
