In this series of Maya tutorials we will learn advanced character rigging techniques in Maya. We’ll start by creating a modular rig we can insert into our skeletons for flexibility and speed. We’ll learn how to create and utilize custom tools to work smarter. We’ll learn how to create IK FK systems, and learn how to enhance these systems to produce more exaggerated results. We’ll even explore ways we can create non-flipping twist rigs that do a great job at holding volume.
By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a solid grasp of rigging characters and be able to use the techniques on your own characters.

And to not keep you waiting, I’ll give you two examples of apps that are better than Maya: Softimage and Houdini. And please don’t bring popularity as an argument for Maya, because that is as retarded as Maya’s users are. Are you a Maya user? :P
You must (hopefully) realize that I don’t truly hold the belief that ALL maya users are retarded (some of them work with Maya because they have no choice) but one can’t help but wonder about the number of poor ignorant folks that blindly choose Maya because they heard it’s the most used in film bla-bla without even trying something else.

Who said we haven’t tried any other apps besides maya? awfully Naive of you to jump to conclusions like that. I myself have played with Maya, 3ds max, blender, houdin, cinema4d, softimage, modo, and 3d coat, Zbrush, Mudbox, Motionbuilder, and Topogun. There were things i liked and disliked about all of them. But i made sure that anything i was able to make in one app, i learned how to do it in another. However I still often go back to maya, the app I started with, simply because i have the most experience in it, and i work fastest in it due to familiarity. I choose speed because my job dictates it. The tool doesnt really matter, its mainly down to your skill level as an artist. which seems to be pretty low based on the way you attack anyone and everyone in every thread. also, your the only artist i’ve ever seen attempting to shove softimage down others throats. like sure, its pretty cool, but it honestly has one of the worst navigation control schemes i’ve ever seen :P

I happen to use Maya and have used it since beta3,but I started out in 3Dstudio and Softimage in the first place.

Muscle system yes, but robust? We could talk a lot on that. Softimage has a third party being developed with ICE right now and maybe in the near future the dev team will implement one. Building tools within XSI with ICE is amazingly powerful a thing that Maya users don’t even dream to have. OK, maybe they do dream.
Thats my point. XSI is soooo awesome but just because of ICE, without ICE what can XSI do, that Maya can’t?

Don’t get me wrong, I like XSI too, but had to jump to Maya just because of lack of muscle and explicit units, of course I could build my own tools in ICE, but was easier to me just learn Maya, and I don’t miss ICE at all.

Popularity. It’s the answer to your wondering and if you have half a brain you’ll know that popularity is a result of many things combined where quality loses its %age weight to other things like timing, marketing, etc.
Maya users get to work on the greatest films because most studios work with Maya as their pipelines are old and hard to change. Some of them do change them however, slowly but surely most of them will migrate to Softimage and Houdini. Wait and see.
And Jughead, you’re the classic Maya user. “maya’s great because big studios use it ne-ne , ne-ne, ne-ne…”. Didn’t I already say that this argument is almost as retarded as Maya users are?

umm….wow first of thanks alot for the tutorial but to the guys waring over everything im a 3ds max user all the way but sometimes i go ahead and work in blender or Maya just for fun sake modeling is modeling its the artist and his/her abilities that should shine through the crowd not the UI.

Crackhead you just sound like the common softimage user that makes me embarrased of being a Softimage user. I have been working in Softimage for 5 or 6 years and it is the best software for me and my needs. I love its modeling, UvUnwrapping, rigging, animation, lighting and compositig tools. Still not perfect, i have work with both maya and 3ds max ( and with modo recently ) and it is easy to see that Softimage is awesome but still not perfect. It always come to the software you are happy with and your experience with it. I gotta say that as a modeler i dont work confortable in maya withouth diamant or nex ( tools that make any other software suck so much includin softimage ) but In this years of experience I have met very good artists ( that u are calling retarded ) creatig stuff with this more simple or not updated tools. Now tell me one thing, do you really thing that s key navigation is better than what the rest of software use? I just got used to it but it is really annoying. Do you think that working with a software where you can not even set up units as cm is fine? You are really wrong. Do you think that marking menus are slower than hotkeys? If so you’ve got a really bad condition. Do you think softimage SDK is gives you as much freedom as MEL? You might come up with an ICE answer, but still dude, Maya might no be the most awesome software by default but studios like it and many people do. Softimage will be better always for me but still there are thounsands of things that maya has and xsi does not. So stop being a stupid fanatic talking about stuff you dont k ow about and stop insulting people for no reasons. You really arethe sort of softimage user that makes the rest of us look like fanatics.
