    • Works a treat. I already own it, but it will be nice to be able to work on a second machine while my main system is rendering away…

  1. That’s great, but from someone who loves Redshift – please if you decide to use it for commercial work, do buy it. RS devs are one of the most awesome guys on the market plus you get access to latest updates and such. Just please think about it.

    • You are absolutely right. But I think 99.9%people here are just collectors – they wont make any money out of testing the renderer on their bedroom pc.

      • Let’s hope you’re right. I mean RS demo already comes with all features, just renders with watermark. Free will be free, someone wants to test w/o watermarks – fine, let him have it. But if you start making money – please at least have the decency to consider supporting the product you’re making money with.

          • Much, much, MUCH faster if you have GTX 1070 or better or even two of such cards. Quality-wise – pretty much the same thanks to the new RS material they introduced in V.2 which is somewhat a copy of the Standard mat from Arnold.
All in all I’d say go Redshift if you have good GPU and you won’t regret it. I know I did and I absolutely love the renderer and the team working on it.
Here’s their latest presentation, it’s a bit technical, but still do check it out:

            • Now…Do I have to say goodbye to my lovely Vray engine (-_-) ? I have been using it for so many years and invested so much time in learning it and now Redshift comes along. How does it compare to Vray in terms of learning curve? What about the features?
Vray has some really cool features and shaders I use quite often like displacement modifier, distance texture and dirt map, environment fog and lens effect, vray frame buffer and render elements and so on.Are any of these features and shaders included with the Redshift render engine?
BTW, how did you come up with this name? While writing this post I almost misspelled to “Redshit”, but I proofread it before posting it…I always do this.

              • In physics, redshift happens when light or other electromagnetic radiation from an object is increased in wavelength, or shifted to the red end of the spectrum. When an object moves away from us, the light is shifted to the red end of the spectrum, as its wavelengths get longer. It’s how they tell if a planet or star is moving away from us. If it’s moving towards us, then you’ll get a blueshift.

              • As great as Redshift is it still lags behind VRAY in many features including full-fledged volumetric shading, specialized shaders, frame buffer (but this one is definitely on its way!). It does have lens shaders, physical sun and sky, lately received a wireframe utility shader, has intuitive and very Arnold-like skin shader, comes with a decent (and fast) car and hair shaders. You can read up on what RS is and what it can do in RS docs.
Also VRAY team also develop Phoenix FD with complete native support by VRAY and uber-awesome features when used together like implicit surface rendering to smooth out voxel simulated liquids.
Overall I would say that if you don’t need much smoke, don’t rely daily on an extensive VRAY material libraries from the web and believe that VRAY, fast as it may be (for a CPU renderer, not talking about VRAY-RT that’s missing a lot of stuff) is sometimes taking too long to render out those 10+ GI bounces AND you have a fast enough GPU (GTX 970 or better will do fine) DO give RS a try (demo version is always up to date and always comes with all features!). After all, it’s not only GPU-accelerated, it’s BIASED! It’s a unique product that lets you get super-realistic and awesome results uber-fast, especially when coupled with GPU-accelerated Irradiance Cache and Irradiance Point Cloud GI and Point Cloud SSS. Also guys are working on their own noise reduction method which should make the renderer even faster when it comes to getting usable production images.
I fcking love it is what I’m saying. Happy New Year.

              • Hi !

                I felt the same feelings.

It tooks me a month to learn everything on Redshift, and said goodbye to Vray.

But it really does worth it, you will not regret it…!!!!

      • Not really. Far more than just 0.1% are trying to use this stuff to make some money or try to establish some kind of portfolio for jobs.

    • Wellllllll, when you install the renderer, it will find your DCC apps that it’s compatible with and install those plugins (it will let you choose).

So, you need to install both the License Manager and once it’s running, install the renderer.

  2. i dont understand very well the following instructions:
Then run the following command to tell the rlm server to install itself as a service.
    rlm -install_service -service_name RLM-Redshift -dlog +rlm.log
You must then start the RLM-Redshift service (only required the first time).
    net start RLM-Redshift

    helpme plis

    • 1. install redshift
      2. create the following folder: C:\redshift_rlm
      3. extract all files from RLM.zip, to C:\redshift_rlm (don’t extract or use the “RLM” folder within the .zip file -> extract all individual files (redshift.dlog, redshift.lic … directly to C:\redshift_rlm
      4. run command-prompt as Administrator (right-clicking the Start button)
      5. type in the following and hit enter: pushd C:\redshift_rlm
      6. type in the following and hit enter: rlm -install_service -service_name RLM-Redshift -dlog +rlm.log
      7. type in the following and hit enter: net start RLM-Redshift
      8. create system variable: go to system (right-clicking the Start button), Advanced system settings? ? ?Environment Variables, create new system variable:
      name: redshift_LICENSE
      value: 5053@localhost

  3. someone knows , where to download some test scenes rendered with redshift

  4. Hello;
Your web site is great and nearly every links are working properly. I looked forward to register but I was unabled. I just enable to subscribe to your web site. Can you register me please?
    Thanks for your great service.

  5. Does anyone know how to register cgpersia forum? It’s closed.
I really want to study CG but I can’t get softwares and tutorials by conventional means. The area where I live has network blockade.
I would appreciate it very much if you can help me.

  6. if you use redshift when you also use realflow plugin?it will collide?realflow plugin won’t work.
we needn’t RLM-Redshift service but env variety is necessary.
you can drop all .lic file and other file to where rlm.exe are(this rlm.exe was cracked)and turn off rlm service, then right click rlm.exe, run as admin, then, lics will be loaded, then you turn off exe and run service, set it’s mode auto.
about rlm crack?you need only one service(rlm service?you set up it at the first time)?you need only one rlm dir included rlm.exe and other file, but if you launch Task Manager you’ll see N rlms if your PC use N softwares’ crack.

  7. Guys why should we use redshift over vray? Why is it better? (i’m asking as a noob)

    • Redshift is far far far faster. And it has a lot less of cons than Vray.

Just try it, take the time to learn Redshift. You will see the difference… !

  8. I love it how guys today don’t even bother to read the install instructions… they download free stuff and they also want video install instructions for it! :D

  9. Hmmmm… i followed the instructions and i get ERROR communicating with license server. What am i doing wrong. I followed it precisely. Win 10 here.

  10. followed instructions to the T and in maya 2017 i get the error from the feedback display

license error: error communicating with license server

I have checked the task manager – services and RLM-Redshift and it is running, any ideas?

    • sorted it, if you have more than 1 rlm on your system it doesn’t work you have to remove the other rlm folder and service

  11. All seem to work fine except AOVs. Can someone please confirm getting AOVs to work or not ?!
