This course is designed to help beginners learn 3DS Max in the most efficient way possible. 3DS Max is a massive program, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by its hundreds of tools that you’ll probably never use. So I have created this crash course to cover only the essentials, and leave out specialized tools you don’t need as a beginner. The goal of this crash course isn’t to teach you every single tool in the software; it’s to teach you specific tools that are important to develop a compact workflow to create your very first clean and professional render as quickly as possible.
Throughout the project, we’re going to use one house project and cover topics like:
Preparing and Exporting the Model: preparing the model and adjusting export settings.
Importing into 3DS Max & cleanup: linking the Revit file, combining by material, and removing native cameras/lights.
V-Ray Physical Camera Setup: placing new V-Ray cameras, adjusting the focal length, and other camera settings.
Initial Lighting & Material Overrides: adding the V-Ray Sun, setting up progressive rendering for fast preview, and using the basic material override.
Importing Assets, Asset Tracking, and Fixing Textures: merging external models and using the Asset Tracking toggle to fix missing material paths.
Sourcing Assets with Chaos Cosmos: utilizing the Chaos Cosmos browser and importing its ready-made assets.
Artificial Lighting, like IES & Area Lights: setting up spheres, IES files, downlights, and more for night scenes renders.
Adding an HDRI Environment: linking a V-Ray Bitmap to the environment slot for a realistic HDRI background
Material Fine-Tuning & Texture Scaling: replacing bad materials, using the eyedropper tool, and scaling down the map
Final Render Settings & Render Elements, we’ll cover the best render settings for 4K resolution renders, and other render addons, including V-Ray Light Mix.
To make this course easy to follow, I’ve included the Revit model in the project resources. The best way to learn a new skill like 3DS Max is by actively participating and working along with the course. So please download the file and follow along.
