Intermediate | 3h 25m | 630 MB | Project Files 6 MB | Required Software: Modo 6.01

modo has found a strong niche in creating virtual product shots for use in advertising and marketing. By using modo, you can create highly realistic shots of your products, reducing the need for product photography. In this course, Dan Ablan leads us through the workflow required to create such highly realistic 3D renders in modo. Discover the optimal settings for modeling, sculpting, and rendering; learn how to model real-world packaging; work with UV maps, Photoshop textures, and other basic materials; and light the products effectively. Dan closes with an overview of rendering the final 3D images for print or preview.

once again lynda.com proves to be useless for learning cg. maybe they should dovcourse on paint

  2. Daluz says:

Man, this is the worst Coca bottle render i’ve ever seen. Modo is great but this tutorial sucks.

  3. darknurb says:

How not to do a product shot, or 10 ways to get your client unhappy with the use of his company logo By Dan Ablan.

  4. Pärra says:

Seriously, Lynda and the other sites are DESPERATE to produce new tutorials.. this one looks like crap.. It should, as darknurb said, be called “How not to do a Product Shot in Modo By Dan Ablan”.

    all 3 links are dead!!!!

  7. phaedarus says:

Isn’t Dan Ablan among the more prominent and experienced instructors for the modo community?

I watched his modo 601 course and quite frankly it didn’t help much in terms of getting to grips with the program as a Maya user.

I guess modo requires an entirely different mindset to understand and use.

    • darknurb says:

No he is not, he is just a dude that’s been around since the LW years making books and videos of this same level.

  8. how to dump says:

“How to not use modo and might as well use paint”

  9. cerni says:

“…you can create highly realistic shots of your products…” Seriously?

  10. Mindows says:

    Torrent plz

  11. craudiaum says:

    WTF? ugly model, shader, lighting…render…composition…

    not even for free ahahaha

  12. craudiaum says:

mouahahahah ! Lynda strike again !!

  14. honzo says:

in my opinion his techniques are incorrect and faulty. he just do it wrong

  15. PrinceVince says:

Man as the others said, that example render looks absolutely terrible. Not Modo’s fault at all. Seriously, who hired this guy?

    • honzo says:

faulty is modeling technique of ablan. he does it like in 90′s on LW… he did not notice we today use beveled cilinder instead of curves with radial sweep

  16. BooleanGuy says:

C’mon guys, don’t be so jealous because he is working in a such great company like Lynda. Awesome render and bottle :) Previous hit with rendering in Cycles was also awesome, dunno why people complained so much

  18. ridicuolous shit tutorial

  19. LeidigordA says:

    ahahahah pure crap bottle

  20. Mike says:

If you have no knowledge and want a quick start, I suppose the tutorial works. But if anyone writes a tutorial about production level quality, then it better deliver a production quality end ‘shot’. This most certainly does not. Don’t bother with this tutorial. Luxology have plenty of tutorials on their site, some of which actually ‘are’ production quality, rather than *pretending* to be one.

  21. blabbermouth says:

theres a whole industry of people making tutorials about products they know nothing about….move over DT here comes Dan Ablan

shitty render. the guy should be ashamed of himself for presenting himself as an expert all these years

  22. real_ratibor says:

For at least last 6 years Dan Ablan narrated NO useful tuts. All same crappy shit and shitty crap. Seems to me Dan is one of those jerky idiots with pretty good sleight-of-mouth to persuade a sales manager brain with tales about his own exceptional skills on every aspect of disputed case. In fact, Ablan shows up less efficient than an amateur seriously got down to business. Comparing, for example, to Richard Yot or Yazan Malkosh I cannot recall any noticeable cg-work of Ablan for past years.

  23. james says:

oh man…i´m kind of good in cg and poor…this guy sucks, to be where he is ahahaha

My god! I just can’t stop crying. Had a good laugh looking at this. No offense, Dan, I have seen blind people producing better stuff… With MS Paint!!!
