The amazing team at Ordinary Folk and an open brief from School of Motion? What more could you ask for? In all seriousness, this project is something special. It’s rare that we motion designers get to use our skills to help support our own community, but the stars have aligned. As a result, we have this award-winning film that combines just about every technique under the sun. This film could act as the perfect time-capsule for all things motion design these past few years. It perfectly sums up the current moment, and there is definitely something for everyone in this Workshop!

First, we peek behind the curtain to learn how Ordinary Folk and their amazing team of freelancers finalized the art direction and look for this film, as well as what they hoped to achieve with the designs.

Solutions to creative problem solving
There is a little bit of everything in this project! In this video, we take a focused look at how the team at Ordinary Folk solved some of the more complicated moments in the film.

Exploring the Faux 3D vs real 3D
Was that real 3D or “fake” 3D? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. In this video, we spend some time discussing just how many of the more volumetric and dimensional shots were created.

Character animation and performance
More often than not, characters and their performances can be the hardest shots to perfect. In this video, we take a look at how Ordinary Folk went about tackling this age-old problem.

Happy accidents and learning lessons
While making any film there are many ups, downs, and surprises along the way. In this video, we discuss many of the happy accidents and moments of spontaneity that popped up while making this film.

The workshop can be viewed without any special software. If you want to download the project files to gain more insights, you will need the following apps for this workshop: Adobe Photoshop (CC 2021 or later), Cinema 4D (R22 or later).
