cmiVFX – Houdini 3Delight Interoperability
This video will show you all of the in and out points of this system, all while demonstrating the creative power that it can harness in each and every artist that uses it. In our projects you will learn how to achieve several crucial scenarios to the Visual Effects Pipeline so that you can be up and running full speed at the end of this video. This content was driven by a large number of emails regarding alternative rendering solutions for Renderman compliant renderers. 3Delight Pro is one of the more popular names in the business due to its availability.
Short Description
This is a step by step trace of how to install 3Delight on Unix and Windows, all the way through final renderings. Consider this the guide for everyone who wants to try 3Delight with hooding. This guide will also help with installing the root system to use with other CG packages with the ability to link to Renderman. We are keeping the price as low as possible so that we can see more people create with this linkage. We are also extending free training videos to a select few artists that send us outstanding renders created with 3Delight and Houdini.
Houdini and 3Delight
Welcome to the highly anticipated Houdini and 3Delight Interoperability, created by CMIVFX and Varomix. A partnership like no other, this joint venture shows the true comradery that is a true CG pipeline. There is a reason that cmiVFX stands alone in the high end market?.? IT’S NOT EASY TO DO!? However true, we take pride in our sadistic need to provide the latest and greatest training in our industry so that digital entertainers can tell their story. We will work with ANYONE that has something fantastic to offer? whether it is a student half way around the world, or another training company that wants to work with us on a video title. We will always pull together with the right people to make the best training the world has to offer. Expect great things?? ALWAYS!
Linux ? Downloading 3Delight
In this chapter will get the correct version of 3Delight, so we can install it an use it later.
Linux ? Installing 3Delight
We will go through the install process, setting a custom installation path and testing or install.
Linux ? Making a Bash Script
We’ll make a bash script to run both 3delight and Houdini from single place, this will help us start everything much faster.
Linux ? Environment Variables
We’ll need to set some environment variables for Houdini, so we can later compile RSL shaders from inside VOPS in Houdini.
Linux ? Setting Mplay
We’ll set Mplay to be our default framebuffer so we have full integration into the complete Houdini pipeline.
Windows ? Downloading 3Delight
In this chapter will get the correct version of 3Delight, so we can install it an use it later.

Houdini ? Setup
We’ll setup Houdini to use 3delight, so we can take advantage of everything that Houdini provides us to work with 3Delight.
Houdini ? Presets
Setting presets will help us be more efficient and will save time, skipping repetitive tasks and setting that are needed for 3Delight.
Houdini ? Assigning Materials
Assigning shaders to geometry in Houdini is pretty simple, thanks to the integration it has with Renderman based Renderers.
Houdini ? Setting up shadows
Shadows need some setup to work inside 3Delight, we’ll setup and understand a few of the parameters neccesary to make this work.
Houdini ? Simple RSL Shader
Houdini provides us with a great visual way to create shaders and we’ll learn how to use that to write our own 3Delight shaders right inside Houdini.
Houdini ? Compile a shader
If you are a hardcore RSL shader writer, this will help you get your already code written shaders into Houdini so artists can use them as any other shaders inside Houdini.
About The Artist
Alvaro Casta?eda, best known as “Varomix” is a 33 years old CG Generalist TD. He lost a little of his self back in 1993 at a Jurassic Park screening, and that totally changed his life. Toy Story finished the job in 1995 – there was no turning back!. He started his way in 3D back in 1998, first using 3ds Max, then Cinema4D and finally in 1999, I met Maya 2.0. Since then I’ve done CGI for print, web, TV, Film, DVD, I guess anything that has pixels in it!. He started using Houdini in 2002 shortly after Side Effects launched the Houdini Apprentice Program. He had also done on-set VFX Supervision and DOP Assisting.

This is nice. This guide will also help with installing the root system to use with other CG packages. Please provide further details for your readers to decide if this is really interesting. Thank you.
