In this series of tutorials, we will learn the basics of preparing 3d models for texturing by creating UV layouts in Maya. UVs and UV layouts are important aspects of creating textures for our 3D models. The UV information serves as a bridge between the 3d objects we create and the 2d textures that we apply before rendering. UVs let us tell Maya how to apply the textures across the surface so having a good UV layout can really make a difference in speeding up the texture creation process and making your textures easily editable down the pipeline. We’ll start by talking about the basic concept of UVs before moving on to learn about some of the different UV projection methods. We’ll also talk about editing UVs and using multiple projections. We’ll cover the creation of UV snapshots to give us a guide when texturing and discuss a multi-tile texture workflow. In the end you’ll have a good understanding of the purpose behind UVs and the knowledge you need to start creating and editing your own UV layouts.

In this series of tutorials we will be learning the process of understanding and simulating a candle flame with the help of Maya fluids. We will be studying in detail the burning of candle flames. We will look at technical theories and discuss the flame’s nature as well as its chemical process. We will learn how to blend such principles to CG art and bring the flame out of the wick with the help of Maya fluids. This course will teach the various technical specifications of fluids and how each and every tweak of the settings can be useful to convert the flame simulation into a realistic behavior. We will advance further into understanding the technical attributes of fluids including density, temperature, dissipation, diffusion, and velocity swirl just to name a few. We will also look at how to bend the flame and have it react to interaction. The end result will take you to the next level of creativity and production workflow understandings.

In this course we will learn about working with the Full Body IK rig that comes built into MotionBuilder. This rig has advanced FK/IK blending, Auxiliary Pivots and effectors, and several other features that make it easier to animate. We’ll begin this project by creating and learning the basics of the FBIK rig. We’ll then move into how we can use the tools built into the rig to animate quicker such as using pinning to lock a hand or foot to a location, using FK/IK blending to create nice arcing motion, using Auxiliary Pivots and effectors to create multiple control points and have the rig affect itself and using the floor contact system to prevent the feet and hands from going through the floor. This series of lessons will illustrate how to use the rig to create appealing animation and some of the time-saving features of the rig. By learning the basics of the rig and how to use these advanced features, we can save time while creating complex character animation.

In this series of tutorials, we will go through the process for rigging, animating, texturing, rendering, and compositing a morning news opener style motion graphics piece. We start out by creating a camera path that we can arrange our models around for a quick setup and flow of the piece. We learn how to create sweeps that move around our models for added emphasis, and we learn fast ways to get our camera pointing in the right direction along this complex path. After finishing our animations, we move onto briefly discussing our texture workflow. We then begin working in After Effects where we take the piece from looking good, to great, by adding a series of effects and color tweaks. In this series of tutorials, we will go through the process of building and detailing a real-time crossbow using Softimage and Mudbox. When building 3D assets, the ability of your computer to manipulate those objects is limited, especially when dealing with very high resolution meshes. Because of this, we use 2D images, like normal maps, to simulate the high resolution detail in a way that we can more easily use. We’ll begin by building the base geometry for our crossbow in Softimage. Once the base geometry is modeled, we will detail and paint the weapon in Mudbox. To finish up, we will generate maps for the color and sculpted detail before viewing our crossbow in Marmoset Toolbag. When you are done, you will have a better understanding of the workflow involved in building and sculpting high resolution props and set pieces with Softimage and Mudbox and creating useable assets from them.
