Rigging and Animating a Simple Character in After Effects

Introduction to Rigging in Maya

This set of tutorials will provide you with a firm understanding of Maya’s rigging tools. We’ll start by learning the basics, like how to establish solid naming conventions, how to create joint chains, and how to work with Maya’s Inverse Kinematics system. We’ll then get into more challenging topics like how to set up a Spline IK system with advanced twist control, how to enhance your controls with the help of Driven Keys and the Node Editor, as well as how to utilize a few deformers that are very important rigging tools. In this tutorial we’ll learn how we can take a modeled character and prepare it for animation.

We’ll begin this process by using MODO’s skeleton tool to build a hierarchy of joints throughout the body. As we build our skeleton we’ll learn how to fix the orientation and alignment of joints along with some basic knowledge of parenting. Once we’ve constructed our skeleton we’ll learn how to bind it to the mesh and explore some of the weight painting tools that can be used to edit the influence our joints have on the geometry.

Following this we’ll dive deeper into rigging our character by learning how to apply inverse kinematics, locators, constraints, and control surfaces along with other cool tools and features to provide our character with the functionality it needs for an animator. Finally, we analyze the functionality of our rig and fix any issues that may have occurred.

After watching this tutorial you’ll be ready to begin rigging your own characters with more confidence while having a lot of fun.

In this course we will learn about working with the Full Body IK rig that comes built into MotionBuilder. This rig has advanced FK/IK blending, Auxiliary Pivots and effectors, and several other features that make it easier to animate. We’ll begin this project by creating and learning the basics of the FBIK rig. We’ll then move into how we can use the tools built into the rig to animate quicker such as using pinning to lock a hand or foot to a location, using FK/IK blending to create nice arcing motion, using Auxiliary Pivots and effectors to create multiple control points and have the rig affect itself and using the floor contact system to prevent the feet and hands from going through the floor. This series of lessons will illustrate how to use the rig to create appealing animation and some of the time-saving features of the rig. By learning the basics of the rig and how to use these advanced features, we can save time while creating complex character animation.

We’ll start by learning how to enhance the Flexi system, we created in Advanced Character Rigging in Maya, making it more robust for spines, necks, and areas of the like, while making sure to keep this modular component clean and animator- friendly. We’ll then build our creature’s skeleton from the ground, up, and learn how the Flexi rig can be easily inserted to save us a lot of time. We’ll also learn how to create a robust pose tracking system for driving corrective targets, as well as how to script a few tools with MEL to work faster. By the end of this course, you will have the skill set needed to rig your own quadrupeds with confidence.

In this series of tutorials we will learn how to create a mechanical rig for 3D visualizations in 3ds Max.

We will begin from the concept of the crane, explaining the different parts and how a crane works. Next, we will introduce the rigging tools used, and the limitations of the setup that a real crane
has, all in 3ds Max. We will then model and texture every main part of the crane separately and assemble it all into a new scene ready to be rigged and refined.

Finally, we will test out our rig with an animation and render it as a preview.
