At Digital-Tutors, we’ve found that many students starting out in modeling have difficulty in creating the specific vision they have. In many cases it’s not necessarily a lack of knowledge of the tools as much as it is a lack of confidence and experience. So, to give you a head start on your modeling, we’ve put together a number of tips collected from production and from teaching students that will help you build the best models you can with minimal frustration.

Maya is the best for animation (read: most powerful, might be overkill for your needs), Modo is the best for polygon modeling. That’s the key of Avatar’s pipeline so disagreeing it’s either the best or one of the best combos you can get is naive, not to mention Maya has the most/best animation training material you can get over the earth.
That’s why I agree it’s a waste of time learning how to model in Maya, if anything get to know the basics so you can get away with small tweaks without needing to export your model – which might bring you nightmares – but don’t waste time doing it all in Maya. If you *really* want to keep all your production needs into one app, then I recommend you get the NEX plugin, but that’s currently not available for 2011.
