If you have ever wanted to make a 2D game using Unreal Engine 5 but couldn’t find out where to start, you are in the right place.
I’m Single-minded Ryan, a game developer and digital artist, and I designed this course for beginners with no experience. Over more than 50 lectures, we are going to make a good-looking 2D platformer using Unreal Engine 5 step by step.
As always, I want you to feel like you are making a real game from the beginning, which is why I spent a lot of time hand-crafting the assets that come with this course, including high-quality character animations, background layers, game level tiles, and VFX animations. I believe the assets will make your learning experience immersive and encouraging.
Then let’s talk about the course.
I’m going to start by giving an introduction to make you feel comfortable with the Unreal editor. Then we will set up a new project, import the assets, and create the player. We are going to be using the Blueprint visual scripting system to control the player, so no coding experience is needed. In fact, Blueprint is a very powerful feature of the Unreal engine, and we are going to be using it everywhere throughout this course, such as implementing the player’s movement, creating the health system, creating the enemy’s AI behaviors, playing the VFX, controlling the game loop, etc.
Level creation is important for 2D games, so I’m going to spend a lot of time showing you how to set up the tileset and paint the tiles, how to use Blueprint to control parallax background layers, and how to arrange sprites to decorate the platform.
Controlling the animations of the characters can be very complicated, so I’m going to show you how to use a powerful and free plug-in called PaperZD to create animation blueprints and control the animations with the animation graph.
I’m going to show you more features of Unreal Engine when we start working on the enemy, such as how to detect walls and edges, how Blueprint class inheritance works, and how to use the Behavior Tree to create enemy AI. In this part, I’m also going to show you how to visually debug the game, which is a very useful skill for game development.
We want the game to be responsive and polished, so I’m going to show you how to add VFX animations and how to create material effects. Here, you’ll learn how to customize your own 2D material for different effects.
Shooting projectiles is quite a common feature of 2D games. I’m going to show you how to create the bullet and control the shooting action of the player. You’ll also learn how to create a health system that can be used for both the player and the enemy.
There is so much more I’m going to cover in this course, such as the UI system, the event dispatchers, how to create a killzone, how to respawn the player, how to reload the game level, etc.
