Does anyone have a v5 for Mac OSX Maya 2009? I really need this plugin!
For those of you trying to get Shave for Mac OSX, download it from JoeAlter.com (http://www.joealter.com/newSite/bins50.htm) (I actually used the 5.1 update that’s up now) and use the keygen supplied in the release here (CGPersia) to generate a key on a windows computer. Then put that key in /Users/Shared/Shave/key.txt and launch maya again and add the shavenode plugin.
Not gonna lie, I didn’t test this method with this release, but it worked on the 5.1v0 OS X Maya 2009 on JoeAlter.com with the XForce keygen from a different site. Probably will work on this one too.

yes, i correctly installed Shave and a Haircut 2008 plug-in to Maya 2008 but after that whenever i check the check box to load it, it completely crashes. that’s why I unistalled the Plug-in and MAya reverts back to normal

The keygen fires up nicely in the C prompt window but I can’t get a serial number generated for it because I can’t get Joe Alter to load.
What next?
keygen does not generate shit for me. Tryed on XP and Vista.
Yeah, if you not careful, to just put THE FIRST 11 characters. Forget Vista or Windows Server, it will not work, you might as well istall back XP;)

I’m running Vista 64 Business edition. I’ve got to since I’m running it on a server motherboard with 8 gigs RAM…soon to be 12 gigs RAM, and XP won’t handle that much RAM.
would that mean that the Shave Plug-in only works with XP and not in Vista?

And there is a crack for 2009 right in there with the download. It’s a keygen.
Install the correct version of Joe Alter, open up Maya 2009 and then go to Window/Settings Preferences/Plug In Manager
Then load the Joe Alter Shave and a Haircut and a window will appear with a serial number. Take the first 11 numbers and copy them, then fire up the keygen and paste the numbers into the keygen to get the registration code.
that is bizar because I installed it on windows 7 64-bit, it has worked correctly but once I restart maya I had to licence it again, that is why I did not post it earlier, but on xp it works great
yessssss! after hundred of test I get it license on windows 7 again, and this time when I restart it works. I don’t know why it did not want, but the first time you load the plugin you have a serial, for me it was always the same -15……., then I tried to load again the plugin and a other serial appeared -123……. and It worked. I don’t know why.
So I think on vista it can work too

On about the eleventh time got the same password to work.
What’s even stranger, installed it onto a machine running windows 64.
Program tried to install to the 32 bit section ( Program X86). Firewall would not allow program to install in 64 bit section.
Disabled firewall, installed, now running…..without installing the crack.

Yes Yule, you can have concurrent editions of Maya installed on your computer. Just make sure that your FLEXLM folder for each is placed in the folder with the respective edition it’s cracking.
So you’ll look in your computer C drive Programs file and you’ll see Maya 2009 with its FLEX LM file and Maya 8.5 containing its FLEX LM file etc.
In fact Maya 7 won’t even be listed close to Maya 2009 and Maya 8 and Maya 8.5 since they’ll be in an Autodesk folder while Maya 7 will be in an Alias foldler.
Interesting comment rtyer…I’m going to try disabling my firewall on Vista 64 Business and see if that helps…
Believe flexlm must be installed to root c drive, not program files.
Yes, I see that even though I wrote each FLEX LM file and installed them to each program’s folder, upon installation they were all installed to one common FLEX LM folder in the root C drive automatically.
OK, so I tried the install (both 64 bit and 32 bit uninstalling one and installing the other) to my Maya 2009 with Vista 64 with Windows firewall turned off. No go for me..same problems..

Hey guys, seems to me that sadly SHave (and all of its versions) are only compatible with XP and not with vista. I’ve tried loading it on 8.5 but the same problem happens. It still crashes
The only way I can think of right now to be able to use a fully functional S&AHC is to install 3DS Max 10. It comes with the full Joe Alter fully integrated.
OK so I tried installing it on my Vista 32 Home on my laptop with Maya 2008 and this is what I got when it refused to let me load Joe Alter into Maya Plug in Manager

Runs perfect on Vista ultimate 64bit. Reason for previous failed attempts was write restrictions on my C. Just took hold of the permissions and it worked.
Massiveman, excellent post.
So I’m trying to remove the write restrictions on my C drive.
I right click on the C drive and choose PROPERTIES then I choose the SECURITY tab. now there I think I’m running at adminstrator level and it says I should have WRITE permissions but as user it says no…
What am I (what are we Vista users) doing wrong here? How exactly should we make this change to give write permission?
OK so I really worked at this;
My Computer/C:/ProgramFilesx86/Autodesk/Maya 2009/
Then right click on that to Properties and then the Security tag..
This gives me a choice of users etc…

User
Trusted Installer
System
Creator Owner
I was able to allow or give permission to Write to all of those except for the Creator Owner. Then I uninstalled JA and then did a fresh install. No luck. Then I did it all again this time giving Full Control to all of them except Creator Owner, which was impossible to do.
And still JA would not install..
What next?
No No. You need to get write permissions on C itself, not Maya’s install directory. “key.txt” gets written on C only. Try this other way that I found worked too.
1. Dont run the keygen by double clicking on it. It will turn off immediately after generating the key, with or without errors. INSTEAD, Open a cmd prompt and run the keygen from there.
2. Let’s say I put the keygen inside my documents. so my command prompt looks like this:
C:\Users\Dragoro\Documents>keygen
Shave and a Haircut for Maya Key Generator – 2003/2008 X-FORCE
The program will generate a valid keyfile for the program above
into the c:\key.txt file.
You need to type the 1st 11 characters (including – if present)
of the string in the program window’s bottom-left corner.
Serial number:82749838782 <- sample random number i just typed in
The computed key is: 113756161453
just copy the generated number
paste it inside a notepad file and save as key.txt
place it inside C:
That’s it.

When I impose write privileges on C drive it goes through on most of its contents, but stuff like pagefiles and programs and programs86 are denied, even though when I’m done it shows that for User I have write privileges for C…
So it’s not allowing me to install JA even though when I open the Plug In manager in MAYA you can see JA with it’s install and start up sitting there.
Any other way to establish write privileges on C aside from right clicking C and then getting Properties/Security?
Vista’s Administrator account only appears in safe mode, but in normal boot only your account appears. I have a single account in my laptop. lets say the account is Smith.
1. I Log into Smith. right click C drive and go to properties.
2. Security tab. It has four accounts here:
Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators
Users
If you click on EDIT… it will take you to the permissions dialog but youll notice even if you activate full control to users, the special permissions at the bottom is dim. This is what you need to activate. Click Cancel
3. Click Advanced at the bottom.
4. Click Owner tab – you could go through Effective Permissions too, but we’ll stick with Owner for now.)
5. Normally the space below would be blank. I need to add Smith account there. I click “EDIT…”
6. Another dialog box appears that has Administrator in it. Click “Other users or groups…”
7. The final window appears. I enter Smith at the space below and click “Check Names” on the right. it completes the account name for me. Click “OK”
8. Now I have Smith below Administrator. Select Smith. Check “replace owner on Subcontainers and Objects” and hit apply. Let it do the work. Click “OK” to close each previous window.
You should now be able to write to C directly. I didnt need to restart but if it doesnt work the first time try restarting. This worked on my laptop. The copy paste into a notepad I did at another computer with the same minor permissions issue. Hope this helps.
If for some reason it still wont generate a key.txt into C, go into planB. generate the key inside a command prompt, copy the key and paste it into a notepad, save it in my Documents as key.txt then drag the file inside C.
That should now work.

Cabbs it work on Vista 64. That note just means it cannot find a license. Not that i didnt install properly. all you have to do is input the first 11 digits into the keygen and it should write out a key.txt for you with the corresponding code to unlock it.
Would this be the first 11 numbers?

Only the first 11, that includes the dash if there is any.
I get the exact same error, my key generator tells me that it has a “Writing key to file.. error occured upon writing the file!”
Do i need to use a different key generator? or is there some seeting i need to change?

You posted that few months ago, in case you still haven’t got it working, this perhaps might help. I found that if I copy the key.txt from outside and paste in C: . It just won’t work. I tried to follow massiveman also, and still in the end couldn’t get the special permission to not be grey. But I have the administrator account to have everything else checked. after that I run command prompt by right clicking it ‘run as administrator’. Only that way then i can generate the key to be placed directly into C:
Another thing that I found if I exit Maya, the next time I open it the 11 digits serial numbers will be different, so I crack it while Maya is running. This works for me, I’m using vista x64 Maya 8.5. Tried for Maya 2008 on the same system, got the (shaveNode) error, That one pretty much hits the wall for me.
Have maya 2009×64, windows xp. Having a hell of a time getting plug-in manager to load JA AT ALL. Prior to upgrading to 2009, I downloaded the 2008 version to play with. The trial expired. I erased (I think) all of it. Installation looks good when I try, BUT, when I go to plugin manager in maya and try to load the JoeAlter plugin I get the “15-day beta key” message (even though this is a different version of the plugin:I downloaded for maya 2008, not 2009 last time!) I tried it with the fileshare file AND by downloading it direct from JoeAlter: neither work.
I went to the script editor to see what the message was. It looks like this (after a few tries.)
Error:Unable to dynamically load C:/Program Files/JoeAlter/shaveHaircult/maya2009/plugins/shaveNode.mll
Error: A DLL initialization route failed.

1. Install appropriate version of shave and haircut (32/64 bit version)
2. restart ur PC
3. load the Shave node from the PLUGIN MANAGER
4. Copy the serial includinf {_} if there is any

and paste in the keygen, Press enter
5. you will get a KEY.TXT file in C drive. just leave it there

Ok, so I’ve searched everywhere on the net and tried everything on this page. There are two types of error:
1. initializationPlugin function failed error
-> which is expected since then you install the license using the crack as described in details above and it will work. check script editor, use the set number there to generate the key.txt…. and so on
2. “shaveNode” was compiled against a newer version of the Maya API…..
-> nothing would load at all, there’s nothing else on the script editor but that single line error message.
-> this one everyone pretty much hits the wall.
when I check same type of error on other forums for other plugins, it points to the direction where recompiling is needed to make it work (thus not because of vista security)

sadly I have no programming background. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to do a fresh compile.

Yes Yule, you can have concurrent editions of Maya installed on your computer. Just make sure that your FLEXLM folder for each is placed in the folder with the respective edition it’s cracking.
So you’ll look in your computer C drive Programs file and you’ll see Maya 2009 with its FLEX LM file and Maya 8.5 containing its FLEX LM file etc.
In fact Maya 7 won’t even be listed close to Maya 2009 and Maya 8 and Maya 8.5 since they’ll be in an Autodesk folder while Maya 7 will be in an Alias foldler.
Interesting comment rtyer…I’m going to try disabling my firewall on Vista 64 Business and see if that helps…

Yes, I see that even though I wrote each FLEX LM file and installed them to each program’s folder, upon installation they were all installed to one common FLEX LM folder in the root C drive automatically.
OK, so I tried the install (both 64 bit and 32 bit uninstalling one and installing the other) to my Maya 2009 with Vista 64 with Windows firewall turned off. No go for me..same problems..

Hey guys, seems to me that sadly SHave (and all of its versions) are only compatible with XP and not with vista. I’ve tried loading it on 8.5 but the same problem happens. It still crashes
The only way I can think of right now to be able to use a fully functional S&AHC is to install 3DS Max 10. It comes with the full Joe Alter fully integrated.
OK so I tried installing it on my Vista 32 Home on my laptop with Maya 2008 and this is what I got when it refused to let me load Joe Alter into Maya Plug in Manager

Runs perfect on Vista ultimate 64bit. Reason for previous failed attempts was write restrictions on my C. Just took hold of the permissions and it worked.

So I’m trying to remove the write restrictions on my C drive.
I right click on the C drive and choose PROPERTIES then I choose the SECURITY tab. now there I think I’m running at adminstrator level and it says I should have WRITE permissions but as user it says no…
What am I (what are we Vista users) doing wrong here? How exactly should we make this change to give write permission?
OK so I really worked at this;
My Computer/C:/ProgramFilesx86/Autodesk/Maya 2009/
Then right click on that to Properties and then the Security tag..
This gives me a choice of users etc…

User
Trusted Installer
System
Creator Owner
I was able to allow or give permission to Write to all of those except for the Creator Owner. Then I uninstalled JA and then did a fresh install. No luck. Then I did it all again this time giving Full Control to all of them except Creator Owner, which was impossible to do.
And still JA would not install..
What next?
No No. You need to get write permissions on C itself, not Maya’s install directory. “key.txt” gets written on C only. Try this other way that I found worked too.
1. Dont run the keygen by double clicking on it. It will turn off immediately after generating the key, with or without errors. INSTEAD, Open a cmd prompt and run the keygen from there.
2. Let’s say I put the keygen inside my documents. so my command prompt looks like this:
C:\Users\Dragoro\Documents>keygen
Shave and a Haircut for Maya Key Generator – 2003/2008 X-FORCE
The program will generate a valid keyfile for the program above
into the c:\key.txt file.
You need to type the 1st 11 characters (including – if present)
of the string in the program window’s bottom-left corner.
Serial number:82749838782 <- sample random number i just typed in
The computed key is: 113756161453
just copy the generated number
paste it inside a notepad file and save as key.txt
place it inside C:
That’s it.

When I impose write privileges on C drive it goes through on most of its contents, but stuff like pagefiles and programs and programs86 are denied, even though when I’m done it shows that for User I have write privileges for C…
So it’s not allowing me to install JA even though when I open the Plug In manager in MAYA you can see JA with it’s install and start up sitting there.
Any other way to establish write privileges on C aside from right clicking C and then getting Properties/Security?
Vista’s Administrator account only appears in safe mode, but in normal boot only your account appears. I have a single account in my laptop. lets say the account is Smith.
1. I Log into Smith. right click C drive and go to properties.
2. Security tab. It has four accounts here:
Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators
Users
If you click on EDIT… it will take you to the permissions dialog but youll notice even if you activate full control to users, the special permissions at the bottom is dim. This is what you need to activate. Click Cancel
3. Click Advanced at the bottom.
4. Click Owner tab – you could go through Effective Permissions too, but we’ll stick with Owner for now.)
5. Normally the space below would be blank. I need to add Smith account there. I click “EDIT…”
6. Another dialog box appears that has Administrator in it. Click “Other users or groups…”
7. The final window appears. I enter Smith at the space below and click “Check Names” on the right. it completes the account name for me. Click “OK”
8. Now I have Smith below Administrator. Select Smith. Check “replace owner on Subcontainers and Objects” and hit apply. Let it do the work. Click “OK” to close each previous window.
You should now be able to write to C directly. I didnt need to restart but if it doesnt work the first time try restarting. This worked on my laptop. The copy paste into a notepad I did at another computer with the same minor permissions issue. Hope this helps.
If for some reason it still wont generate a key.txt into C, go into planB. generate the key inside a command prompt, copy the key and paste it into a notepad, save it in my Documents as key.txt then drag the file inside C.
That should now work.

Cabbs it work on Vista 64. That note just means it cannot find a license. Not that i didnt install properly. all you have to do is input the first 11 digits into the keygen and it should write out a key.txt for you with the corresponding code to unlock it.
Would this be the first 11 numbers?

Only the first 11, that includes the dash if there is any.
I get the exact same error, my key generator tells me that it has a “Writing key to file.. error occured upon writing the file!”
Do i need to use a different key generator? or is there some seeting i need to change?

You posted that few months ago, in case you still haven’t got it working, this perhaps might help. I found that if I copy the key.txt from outside and paste in C: . It just won’t work. I tried to follow massiveman also, and still in the end couldn’t get the special permission to not be grey. But I have the administrator account to have everything else checked. after that I run command prompt by right clicking it ‘run as administrator’. Only that way then i can generate the key to be placed directly into C:
Another thing that I found if I exit Maya, the next time I open it the 11 digits serial numbers will be different, so I crack it while Maya is running. This works for me, I’m using vista x64 Maya 8.5. Tried for Maya 2008 on the same system, got the (shaveNode) error, That one pretty much hits the wall for me.
Have maya 2009×64, windows xp. Having a hell of a time getting plug-in manager to load JA AT ALL. Prior to upgrading to 2009, I downloaded the 2008 version to play with. The trial expired. I erased (I think) all of it. Installation looks good when I try, BUT, when I go to plugin manager in maya and try to load the JoeAlter plugin I get the “15-day beta key” message (even though this is a different version of the plugin:I downloaded for maya 2008, not 2009 last time!) I tried it with the fileshare file AND by downloading it direct from JoeAlter: neither work.
I went to the script editor to see what the message was. It looks like this (after a few tries.)
Error:Unable to dynamically load C:/Program Files/JoeAlter/shaveHaircult/maya2009/plugins/shaveNode.mll
Error: A DLL initialization route failed.
I need help very, very badly. I NEED this plugin to work because I stink at Maya Hair (think porcupine when describing my last attempt.)

guys, after reading all the discussion and all and still trying to load it up i am getting the same error of failed to initialize… i am still trying to run it on vista and on xp both…. ran it both on maya 8.5 and maya 2009 (on xp and on vista) .. and am getting the same error everytime… what the hell is wrong here.. is this a fake upload or what kindly help me out.. caus i am really stuck cause of this as i have a very big project at hand.. and this software is somewhat necessary for it…

1. Install appropriate version of shave and haircut (32/64 bit version)
2. restart ur PC
3. load the Shave node from the PLUGIN MANAGER
4. Copy the serial includinf {_} if there is any
******* (Note in 64 bit it gives and error such as “” // Error: initializePlugin function failed (shaveNode) “” Just open the script editor copy the numbers (copy only the first 11 numbers including {-})
and paste in the keygen, Press enter
5. you will get a KEY.TXT file in C drive. just leave it there

Ok, so I’ve searched everywhere on the net and tried everything on this page. There are two types of error:
1. initializationPlugin function failed error
-> which is expected since then you install the license using the crack as described in details above and it will work. check script editor, use the set number there to generate the key.txt…. and so on
2. “shaveNode” was compiled against a newer version of the Maya API…..
-> nothing would load at all, there’s nothing else on the script editor but that single line error message.
-> this one everyone pretty much hits the wall.
when I check same type of error on other forums for other plugins, it points to the direction where recompiling is needed to make it work (thus not because of vista security)
