  1. Modo: Because 3D Max or Maya are just weaker and are NOT industry-leading software.

Why put in the extra-effort into learning a program that is required for 90% of studio jobs, when you can learn Modo!

    • Modo is a very good tool anyway. Max or Maya are really the best animation and cg tools, but Modo is more friendly poligonal modeler and texture. UV is a breeze in Modo too. And it is fast. You can learn Modo to Model, paint or even sculpt (very good but zbrush is much better), then send you model and texture to Max ou Maya. Rick Baker and various artists uses Modo. Use as start point, finish your job in Max or Maya. Still pictures are very fast and well rendered in Modo too.

  2. thx for upload, seams like they finally nailed it ;), been working with it for last two days not single crash, even with some really heavy scenes, and for the comment about max and maya being superior,, well they are more complete packages i give you that, but as the polygon modeling tool modo is far ahead (i`m working with max for last nine years and modeling speed is really in no way comparable to modos)
    cheers

  3. Minks, i totally agree with you, i mean these are the real facts!
I’m going to soon work this way : Modelling in Modo and Max for the rest. Do you think it’s better to do all the painting/texturing stuffs in Modo or Max?
I learned the basics of painting in Modo, and recently watched all i could find about the painting in Max, now it’s time to practice and work on the better package, but wich one is?

    • As I’ve never been paid for what little work I’ve done, I can only speak as a hobbyist. Max is what I know best, and have used it on and off since version 3. While I do like it a lot, especially for rendering, the poly modeling tools have always felt like a bit of an after thought. This makes sense seeing as it is a very large program that doesn’t intensely focus on any one part of the pipeline. This is why I like programs like Modo, and especially Silo, where the entire focus is on modelling quickly, easily, and efficiently. Max is a large program where features has been either added or altered/tweaked over time, while a program like Silo was built from the ground up with sub-d modelling solely in mind. The difference shows.

For the pros, where time equals money, I can understand the desire to work in one single program that does it all, and especially the desire to not have to waste precious time learning how to use another. Personally I found learning how to model in Silo rather easy. It only took me about an hour of playing around to figure everything out, and the only sticking point I ran into was symmetrical mirroring, easily overcome by taking a quick peak at the manual. How much time it takes depends on the artists ability and willingness to learn, as well as the complexity of the program I suppose. Someone who is used to Max or Maya will likely have a really hard time grasping even the simplest of things in other programs, like ZBrush for instance.

In the end, it all boils down to what works for the individual. Some prefer Max over Maya. Some prefer ZBrush over Mudbox. Arguing over which program is best is a pointless exercise, and true waste of time. Use which ever feels right, gets the job done in a reasonable amount of time, and results in a paycheck.

      • Thanks, but my question was about Modo Paint Tools VS Viewport Canvas ;)

        • It?s very good and the fastest visualization on marketing. Good render for still images. Not good to animation, CG or Dinamics anyway. Visit the Luxology gallery,
