This 2-disc set takes an in-depth look at the design and creation of a detailed character head using Pixologic?s ground breaking software ZBrush. In over eight hours of lecture, Alex Alvarez sculpts a head from scratch using Zspheres and ZBrush?s arsenal of sculpting and detailing tools.
Beginning with primitive shapes derived from Zspheres, the primary forms of the head are quickly blocked out to determine general proportion and design. Alex then refines the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and horn regions before moving into Projection Master to create surface details. Once the geometry is complete, the use of ZBrush as a texturing tool is demonstrated in the creation of high-resolution bump, color and specular maps. The creation of custom tileable Alpha libraries with ZBrush and Photoshop is also demonstrated. In conclusion, Alex shows how to integrate geometry, displacements and textures using Maya’s native renderer and Mental Ray. Every step of the process is shown using real-time and timelapse video.

A bit old but still ok to watch. heaps of the software functionalites have changed since 2006 and everything can be created differently now. cheers

Thanx for sharing, but this tut result is baaad, to the point that it is pathetic.
Novadays, 99% web tuts is on and on about zbrushing monsters with horns, and this one really suck badly. And 7GB for learning what? How to be bad and untalented in repetitive non educational brushin’ stereotypical and easyest monster-horn-bust task?
Funny you mentioned this, zveitakt. The instructor of this tut is the founder of the Gnomon Workshop ! I hope he doesn’t find out !LOL To eb frank we are on the same page here !
exactly and that’s why he suck. he may be a good instructor (he was hired by cameron to instruct the art team to the digital techniques and dismissed later on) but lacks talent.
I agree with u all, I say thanks to the uploader anyway rvrn if this tut its surpassed, the tecniques used here probably in the next version of the program won’t be used again, because slower.
AHAHA Man i thought that i was the only one considering him the lamest in that school! Great ideas and great success, but really no sculpting abilities. Alex throw the towel!
Alex is a technical guru, he is not the best artist out there, but he is a lot better than he was back in the day. that is why he has the top artist working at his school. Alex is simply teaching you a technique, not how to be an artist, that is up to the user. give the guy props where it is deserved.
You just got to admit, the man needs to just stick with the rendering side of things. It’s the only thing his good at…that and running gnomonworkshop.
The reason gnomon IS successful is because of OTHER artists great tuts! ahahah
was it even worth the trouble.
